Football fans in the forces have been invited to see two of the top teams in England battle it out for the Community Shield this Sunday. Hundreds of troops will be at Wembley this Sunday 7th August to see Manchester United take on Manchester City for the first silverware of the season. This opportunity has been made available by a kind donation of tickets by the FA to Tickets For Troops.
This continues the relationship between the two; tickets have been given to troops for many recent events, including the FA Cup Final, as well as the recent European Championship Qualifier against Switzerland.
Chairman Lord Marland said: "Tickets for Troops has benefited from a great wave of generosity from our ticket donors and patrons who have wanted to demonstrate their support and appreciation of the dedication and commitment of the marvellous men and women from our forces. I want to thank The FA for being one of our leading ticket providers, and for their great generosity during these difficult times."
The match promises to be fiery, taking place just months after the two met in the semi-finals of the FA Cup at Wembley, when City finished on top thanks to a second half goal from Yaya Toure. It provides an opportunity for fans to see their clubs' new signings take to the field in the final match before the Barclays Premier League begins.
Tickets For Troops was set up in 2009 to provide members of the Armed Forces with free tickets for major sporting events, theatre performances, music concerts and cultural attractions.
Since launching it has been donated over 260,000 tickets and almost 100,000 troops have registered on the website www.ticketsfortroops.org.uk
Tickets For Troops has been supported by a wide range of organisations and has been able to offer free tickets to a huge number of high profile events; recently these have included tickets for Iron Maiden concerts, Premier League football matches, and the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Patron Alan Shearer said: "I am delighted and proud to back such a fantastic scheme. I am sure this will make a major difference to our Armed Forces and is a very simple way for us to recognise their bravery and sacrifice."
